LVR Industrial Museum Oelchenshammer

Short facts

  • Engelskirchen

One of the last water-powered forging hammers in the Oberbergisches Land.

The Oelchenshammer is around 200 years old and bears witness to early industrial iron processing. The Bergisches Land region offered ideal conditions for the early iron industry thanks to its ore deposits, forests and watercourses. These locational advantages were later relativised by the now leading role of the Ruhr region, which had the advantage of hard coal mining. As a result, the operation of many hammers gradually became unprofitable and eventually ceased. Not so the Oelchenshammer. Production continued here until the 1940s. The Oelchenshammer is connected to the Rheinisches Industriemuseum in Engelskirchen by a 3 kilometre hiking trail. The forging demonstrations are well worth a visit, giving visitors an idea of early industrial working conditions. The now restored hammer also offers rooms for seminars, birthdays, family celebrations, company and club celebrations.
